What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work?

My favourite thing to do outside of work is being outdoors as much as possible, especially running or getting out on the netball court.

How did you get started with netball?

I started playing netball with a team of friends in primary school for fun on a Saturday.  We trained once a week after school but it was just a good excuse to hang out with my friends. I started running at the beginning of covid and the lockdown periods. I used it as a way to keep fit for when the netball season started again, as well as an activity that allowed me to get out of the house and spend my daily hour of exercise!

What do you enjoy about netball and running?

Through netball I have discovered a community that is not only supportive of my passions on the netball court but also cares about my interests off the court. I enjoy being part of a culture that works hard but isn’t afraid to have fun. I have developed life-long relationships through netball where the people around me not only help me learn new skills but also provide an environment where I am able to push myself. I enjoy running as it allows me to switch off for a bit by putting in headphones and letting go of anything that has been on my mind.

What special skills do you need to do your activity?

With anything it takes persistence to further the skills you use within your activity. One thing about netball is that you have to be able to read the play before it even happens. This is something that I am wanting to get much better at, but watching the older girls in my netball club pull it off is extremely impressive. They say that your mind gives up before your body, so one special skill you need while running is being able to tell when its your body talking and not just your brain telling you no when you feel like you want to stop.

What’s the funniest, scariest or most interesting moment you’ve had whilst doing this activity?

A scary moment that I have had while running is being swooped by plovers. I don’t think I have ever run as fast as I did that day.
