We know that regular movement and exercise throughout our lives plays an important role in healthy ageing and there are many options for keeping fit and active in your sixties, seventies and beyond!
Group training can provide a great environment for safe and effective exercise. For many people exercise in a social setting is more enjoyable than battling it out in the gym on your own, uncertain of what you should be doing to best achieve your goals. Group exercise can be a great way for people to increase their exercise consistency and also to develop new friendships.
What we have been doing recently at Personal Best is running Small Group Strength Classes for adults over 60, led by a physiotherapist. We listened to our patients’ feedback and developed a program to meet the goals, needs and desires of our patients. The class consists of exercises to challenge your strength, flexibility, balance, and aerobic fitness. All of which play an important role in keeping you doing the activities that fill your bucket, whether that be as a grandparent, travelling, completing important jobs around the house or continuing your favourite sport.
There are two key reasons why our Small Group Strength Classes differ from a class at your local commercial gym:
1. The Assessment Process
Before joining our class you MUST complete a one-on-one assessment. This helps us:
- Obtain your medical and injury history
- Understand your goals
- Assess how you move
- Demonstrate and teach key exercises and movements
- Establish YOUR baseline for starting exercises
2. Small group size, maximum of 6 participants
Keeping the group size to 6 participants allows us to safely challenge those over 60 years of age and help us make any necessary adjustments for each individual. This helps you get the most out of the class – if for some reason you cannot safely complete a common exercise, we can find an alternative that still challenges you.
We are now taking registrations for our 2023 January intake. These spaces are limited and will fill up quickly so reach out to Mary on 6056 6616 if this is something you are interested in. If you would like to hear what other participants think about our class, click here.
